Max speculates a great deal in his book(s) and Bulletins regarding the science behind fire walking. As a health physicist and former reactor operator, I know a bit about physics and heat transfer, and as a spiritual researcher and practitioner I know a bit more about energy in general.

While waiting with my then-15-year-old daughter for my turn at a 30-foot fire walk six years ago, I had the opportunity to consider the principle behind it, and it occurred to me that energy transfer is ALWAYS from high to low--not necessarily high- to low-frequency, or positive to negative, but in magnitude. For example, air in a pressurized container, such as a balloon, always comes out, not in, when opened. I then realized that if I perceive my energy as being higher than that of the fire's energy, there was no way it could burn me.

My daughter didn't bother with these thoughts; she just did it. We didn't do any mantras, and we didn't look away from the hot coals or distract our minds in any way or even hurry across. To both of us, it felt like walking on a warm blanket. Most people crossed without injury. Some, like my ex-, were burned. Fear lowers energy like nothing else--in all areas of life.
